Located in Maggiora, in the heart of the Novara hills, the Vallana winery is a family business with a long winemaking tradition. In the 1950s, Bernardo Vallana made the wines of this little-known area ofPiedmont popular all over the world, and today his grandchildren Francis and Marina continue to promote this territory by producing expressive and high-quality wines. The Nebbiolo grapes for this wine are sourced from the subalpine territory of Alto Piemonte, in the municipality of Gattinara, on the right bank of the Sesia River, on volcanic and glacial soils. After manual harvesting, the wine is made in concrete vats. The finished wine then ages in oak barrels for at least two years, and a few more months in the bottle. Gattinara Vallana is an austere wine with a bright and clear color and garnet red tones. On the nose, it reveals a complex aromatic profile with notes of small red fruits, spices, and undergrowth. On the palate it is structured, deep and intense, complex and elegant. It has firm but well-integrated tannins and a long finish with notes of undergrowth. It is excellent to enjoy now with braised red meat and wild boar ragu, but it can remain in the cellar for several years and evolve wonderfully.
