Astoria, Fervo Refrontolo Marzemino Passito 2022 is a luscious, full-bodied white from Marzemino (Refrontolo, Italy), in the sweet and dessert wines style. Acidity is fresh; oak influence is none. Good with chocolate, fruit dessert, blue cheese, foie gras.

Refrontolo is a tiny sub-zone in the Treviso hills, and this passito from Astoria is one of its most characterful expressions. Marzemino (the grape Mozart had his Don Giovanni praising in the opera's final act) is dried on straw mats after harvest, concentrating its naturally dark fruit and firming up its acidity before fermentation is deliberately arrested at 120 grams of residual sugar per litre. The result is a wine that's sweet but not cloying: think blackberry compote, morello cherry, and a long finish that slides into dark chocolate. It's a dessert wine that earns its sweetness rather than simply having it. We'd open it alongside a dark chocolate tart or a classic summer pudding, and serve it well chilled in a small glass.
