Château Ausone 2002
Château Ausone 2002 is a dry, full-bodied red from Merlot, Cabernet Franc (Saint-Émilion, France), in the rich, smooth reds style. Tannins are moderate and acidity moderate; oak influence is some. Those scales describe the wine when young; this is a 24-year-old bottle and its tannin and oak will have softened. Good with roast chicken, roast pork, bolognese, charcuterie.

Ausone produces one of Bordeaux's most sought-after wines. Where so much of the Right Bank leans into plush Merlot generosity, Ausone is all tension and restraint, shaped by its extraordinary amphitheatre of limestone and clay on the côte above the town. The 2002 vintage, released during Alain Vauthier's transformative tenure, is predominantly Cabernet Franc with a sizeable Merlot component, and it shows. This is a wine of precision rather than power, with cool iron-flecked minerality threading through dark cherry and dried violet.
