Clos de la Roilette Griffe du Marquis is not the Fleurie you pour on a Tuesday without thinking. Alain Coudert makes this from two parcels of 80-year-old vines on the clay and granite boundary with Moulin-à-Vent, and ages it for twelve months in used Burgundy barrels. The result is Gamay with real structure: dark plum, violet, a touch of iron-rich earth, and tannins that mean business. The name is a family joke turned label — Alain's mother was nicknamed "la Marquise" by a family friend, and it stuck. Only around 3,000 bottles are made each year.
