The 2017 of Cousino Macul's icon wine is a deep ruby in colour with flecks of garnet and purple. Elegant on the nose with hints of soft spice, leather, it offers plump notes of pretty, sweet red cherry, dusty plums and graphite. This feels really smart, it shows good lift and poise, really neatly judged. With excellent depth of fruit, the palate shows good density and it feels very complete immediately. There is energy here, a delicate earthy underpinning, very fine-grained tannins, it remains pleasingly elegant and very well-balanced. Almost silky in parts, a melding quality to the structure, this isn't sweet, it isn't overtly savoury either - it's great! Long and fine, it knocks spots off its rivals!
