Château d`Arche is best known as a classified Sauternes estate, but also produces a Merlot-based red from vineyards in the wider Bordeaux appellation. 1997 was a difficult, rain-affected vintage for red wine in the region, giving lighter, softer wines built for relatively early drinking rather than long ageing. Expect a mature colour, with soft red fruit, earthy and savoury notes and gentle, resolved tannins typical of a claret now fully at its peak. Best drunk without delay alongside simple roast poultry or charcuterie rather than kept further.
