Merchant's description

Drink it now or cellar for up to 15 years. Serve chilled. Founded in 1984 by local winemaker Marc Ollivier, Domaine de la Pepiere takes its name from the Old French “pépie” meaning “thirst”. Marc’s passion for the local terroir was such that his domaine became one of the first in Muscadet to vinify and bottle by individual plots. This approach set the groundwork for later classifications of the terroir. Today the domaine is entirely farmed using organic and biodynamic methods to preserve biodiversity and protect the ecosystem. In total the estate has 28 hectares of prime parcels including the outstanding Clisson cru which is planted on poor and stony compacted granite soils. Conditions here are superb for quality winemaking thanks to the limited rainfall in summer, excellent soils, and moderate sunny days in the ripening season. Grapes are fermented in stainless steel or cement with wild yeasts and then aged on the lees for 24 months. The focus and drive of this characterful Muscadet reminds of Chablis, with vibrant citrus and tropical fruit notes along with hints of delicate white flowers and chalk. On the palate there’s a creamy texture and medium body supported by a strong backbone of acidity and long savory finish. Clisson is a great value white that easily punches above the price-tag and showcases the potential of this underrated region.
