Enjoy it now, or cellar for up to 10 years. No need to decant before serving. In the search for great Alsatian wine, Domaine Zind-Humbrecht is a name that you can put faith in. It was founded in 1959, in a merging of the great wine families Humbrecht and Zind. Léonard and Geneviève Humbrecht built a new cellar in the Zind’s homeland of Wintzenheim, and over the 1960s and 70s, they set about replenishing many of Alsace’s deserted vineyards. Their efforts have led to an incredible collection of Alsace’s finest plots, including many vineyards that have become Grand Cru’s, and windswept hills that make a perfect location for cultivating Pinot Gris. Incumbent wine-maker Olivier Humbrecht believes in the grape’s potential. He uses its neutral character to his advantage, twisting it into something with real character. The nose is refined, exhibiting minerality at first, before expanding into clear notes of pear, apple and honey. Consider giving it some breathing time to open up. It has a thirsty, dry texture in the mouth with bright acidity and brilliantly focused fruits. Look for tart notes of lemon, lime zest, ripe pear, and apple. This Pinot Gris has an exquisitely clean finish and would be an excellent palate cleanser. Consider serving it alongside creamy chicken dishes, light fish, or soft cheeses.
