Pofadder is Eben Sadie’s expression of Cinsaut from the Swartland, sourced from old, dry-farmed bush vines planted on schist soils in the Riebeeksrivier area. Part of Sadie’s Old Vine Series, it demonstrates the seriousness and longevity Cinsaut can achieve when grown at low yields and handled with restraint. The 2023 was fermented in concrete, with a proportion of whole bunches, before maturation in older large-format oak. The wine is medium-bodied and precise, with wild strawberry, cranberry and floral notes alongside an earthy, mineral character. Fresh acidity and fine, firm tannins give the wine definition and a long, linear finish. A particularly focused vintage of Pofadder, combining Cinsaut’s natural perfume and delicacy with considerable structure and ageing potential.
