El Carretil is one of Artadi`s single-vineyard Tempranillo wines, grown on limestone-rich slopes in Rioja Alavesa and made with the same painstaking, low-intervention approach the estate applies to its flagship El Pison. The 2012 shows a deep, bright robe and a nose of ripe dark cherry, violet and liquorice. The palate is concentrated yet fresh, with fine, statuesque tannins, a mineral tang and well-judged oak (12 months in new French barrels) framing the fruit. Long, persistent finish. Drink now to 2032, ideally with slow-cooked lamb or a mature Manchego.
