Tasting notes Escorihuela Gascon Malbec Grand Reserve is wonderfully expressive from the first swirl, with aromas of ripe plums and jammy red berries. That fruit carries through to the palate, where it’s joined by soft vanilla and gentle notes from oak ageing. The tannins are round, sweet and polished, giving a full-bodied red wine that feels smooth rather than heavy, with a long, satisfying finish. How it’s made This Grand Reserve is 100% Malbec from the estate’s own vineyards in Agrelo, one of Mendoza’s most highly regarded districts. After fermentation in stainless steel tanks, the wine spends 12 months in French oak barrels, then rests in bottle for a further 14 to 18 months before release. That extra time in bottle is what gives it such a smooth, integrated character. Food pairing Malbec and steak is a classic match for good reason, and this wine is superb with a chargrilled ribeye or sirloin. It’s equally good with roast beef, slow-cooked lamb, barbecued meats, venison and mature hard cheeses such as aged Cheddar or Manchego. For a meat-free option, try it with mushroom and lentil dishes or a rich bean chilli. Serving suggestion Serve at around 16–18°C. Opening the bottle half an hour before serving, or pouring into a decanter, lets the fruit and oak really open up.
