Ferrari was founded in 1902 by the visionary winemaker Giulio Ferrari who studied in France before returning to his native Trentino and becoming the first to plant Chardonnay here. Ferrari was certain that with the combination of exceptional Trentino terroir and the majestic Chardonnay grape he could make top quality sparkling wines. He chose to adopt the traditional method used over in Champagne and soon began to receive recognition and awards that would make Ferrari Italy’s most famous sparkling wine. Not having any direct heirs himself, Ferrari passed the estate to his close friend Bruno Lunelli and today the winery is in the capable hands of the third generation of Lunellis. Their Ferrari Perle is crafted from estate vineyards planted at 1000-2000 feet of altitude facing south-east or south-west for maximum exposure to sunlight. The grapes are harvested by hand and the must is fermented in tanks. The second fermentation then takes place in the bottle and the wine is left to mature on the lees for 48-53 months. A tiny amount of sugar is added when the wine is disgorged to add a very subtle touch of sweetness. The result is a lively, refreshing sparkling wine with ample aromas of green apples, pears, brioche and sweet almonds.
