Lothian Vineyards Chardonnay, Elgin Valley (2022) 2022

Lothian is a family estate in the Elgin Valley, South Africa's coolest growing region - a former protea farm on the banks of the Palmiet River, run by the Wilson family across three generations of Cape winemaking. They work with Richard Kershaw, one of only a handful of Masters of Wine making wine in the country, to draw finesse rather than weight out of the cool site. The Chardonnay comes from three blocks, hand-harvested and whole-bunch pressed after a short period of skin contact. Fermentation starts in stainless steel on the vineyard's own ambient yeast, then the juice is racked into French barrels, where regular lees-stirring builds the mid-palate over ten months. There's no malolactic fermentation, which is the quiet decision that keeps the acidity bright and the wine focused rather than broad. It pours pale yellow, with orange and apricot, yellow apple and a lift of nutmeg and gentle oak spice over a wet-stone edge. The palate is textured but taut - crisp acidity carrying a real sense of richness, then a long, mineral finish. Serve cool, around 10-12°C.
