Drink it now or cellar for up to 20 years. It is recommended to decant it for an hour. The Mazzei winery boasts a long winemaking tradition dating back to 1435 and spanning 24 generations. This elegant Super Tuscan pays homage to their long history and more specifically to Philip Mattei, one of the family's ancestors, who left Tuscany in 1700 for America, where he planted the first vineyards, contributing to the development of viticulture in Virginia and across the new continent. He was also a friend of Thomas Jefferson, the third president of the United States. The Cabernet Sauvignon grapes come from the Fonterutoli vineyards in Castellina in Chianti and Belguardo in Montebottigli, at altitudes ranging from 50 to 310 meters above sea level and on soils predominantly composed of alberese or sandstone. The vines, averaging 15 to 25 years old, enjoy exposure varying between south and southwest. After manual harvesting, fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature in stainless steel, and the finished wine ages for 1.5 years in a mix of French and American oak (30% new) before bottling. In the glass, the wine reveals a deep, dark ruby color and an intense, broad aromatic profile with initial notes of raspberry and cherry, followed by hints of spice and bell pepper. On the palate, it is rich and smooth, complex and full-bodied. It is concentrated and ripe with firm yet well-integrated tannins and a long, satisfying finish. Pair it with spicy meat dishes or aged cheeses.
