Le Volte is the most approachable wine from Ornellaia, one of the great names of the Tuscan coast. It's made by the same team behind the estate's famous flagship, drawing on younger vines and the same coastal vineyards, but built to be enjoyed young and easily rather than cellared. It's a Cabernet Sauvignon-led blend, filled out with Merlot, grown on the stony coastal soils of Bolgheri. Each grape is fermented separately to keep its character, then the wine spends around ten months partly in used French oak barrels and partly in concrete - a light touch that softens the tannins while keeping the fruit fresh and to the front. The result is bright and easy-drinking: ripe red berries, dark cherry and a touch of wild Mediterranean herb, with silky tannins and a fresh finish. Medium-bodied and ready to go. Serve at 16-18C.
