Pavillon Rouge is the second wine of Château Margaux, made with an unusually high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon for extra structure. The 2016 offers morello cherry, black raspberry and cassis fruit with touches of menthol, dark chocolate and dried Mediterranean herbs. On the palate the tannins are fine and satiny rather than aggressive, giving a taut, elegant frame with a saline, mineral edge. Medium-bodied and already approachable, it will continue to gain complexity to around 2040. An excellent introduction to the Margaux style at a fraction of the cost.
