Tokaji Essencia is a decadently sweet wine that is incredibly rare and extraordinarily complex. The 2008 Essencia from The Royal Tokaji Company was produced from botrytised Furmint, Harslevelu and Yellow Muscat grapes hand-harvested between mid-October and mid-November once the berries had completely raisined. According to the Company’s vintage report, 2008 was almost the perfect vintage and produced a harvest of almost unparalleled quality. In 2016, Neal Martin of The Wine Advocate scored this 97 points and gave it a drinking window of 2016-2100. He described it as “an otherworldly feat of nature” with aromas of “freshly cut tangerines, apricot and orange zest” and a palate “founded upon energy and tension, a silver thread of acidity that cuts through layer upon layer of orange zest, Japanese yuzu, tangerine and honey.”
