Seghesio are a household name when it comes to California Zinfandel thanks to Italian immigrant Edoardo Seghesio and his wife Angela who planted their first vines in the Alexander Valley in 1895. The estate managed to survive Prohibition by making grape juice and selling wine to other producers, and today has over 300 acres in Sonoma which include some of the oldest vines in the United States. Their Home Ranch Zinfandel is a great introduction to their signature house style since this vineyard is built around the estate’s oldest vines planted over 125 years ago by Edoardo. The vineyard is also planted with cuttings taken from these original plants to preserve their genetic heritage. The vines sit on shallow clay soils underlaid with basalt and volcanic rock, creating challenging conditions and forcing the plants to grow deep roots. The combination of old vines and tough soils create tiny berries that are extremely concentrated in flavour. On the nose you can expect plenty of seductive cassis and blackberry with hints of cocoa, sunbaked earth and spice. This is a great bottle to bring to that special barbecue or serve up alongside your favourite steak.
