Drink it now or cellar for up to 10 years. It is recommended to decant it for an hour. Seghesio Family Vineyards has a special place in California wine history as one of the original producers of Zinfandel, dating back to 1895 when Italian immigrant Edoardo Seghesio planted his first vines in the Alexander Valley. With his wife Angela he began building up the winery and making wines for the local market. Miraculously, the couple were able to keep operating during Prohibition by selling grape juice and supplying bulk wine to other producers. Today this legacy continues with over 300 acres of vineyards across Sonoma, including Dry Creek, Alexander and Russian River Valleys. As well as having the oldest Sangiovese vines in the US, they’re also blessed with many Zinfandel vines that are 50 to 100 years old. This enables them to produce succulent, concentrated reds like this Cortina Zinfandel. Fruit for this special cuvee comes primarily from the Chen Vineyard in Dry Creek Valley which was planted in 1972 on sandy soils near a river. This generates cooling morning fog and breezes which help cool the vineyard in the hot summer months. The result is a powerful, intense wine that’s bursting with crushed dark berries, warm winter spice, and cocoa with a slight savoury edge.
