Shed 530 Estate, Mutu Reserve Chardonnay 2021
Shed 530 Estate, Mutu Reserve Chardonnay 2021 is a dry, full-bodied white from Chardonnay (Hawke's Bay, New Zealand), in the rich, round whites style. Acidity is fresh; oak influence is some. Good with roast chicken, shellfish, salmon, creamy pasta.

This is the serious end of Shed 530’s Chardonnay game. The Mutu Reserve 2021 comes from the Oban Station vineyard in Hawke’s Bay, a steep, north-north-east-facing site with limestone and free-draining loam soils. The fruit is hand-picked and carefully pressed, then fermented and aged in new French barriques with bâtonnage, giving the wine plenty of texture and depth. In the glass, it’s full-bodied, creamy and toasty, with baked peach, nectarine and ripe grapefruit alongside vanilla, smoky oak and a distinctive Brazil-nut character. There’s real weight here, but the medium acidity keeps it fresh rather than heavy, with fine tannins adding a little grip to the long, creamy finish. A bold, richly textured Hawke’s Bay Chardonnay that wears its oak confidently. It's excellent with roast chicken, lobster or scallops, but I’d also put it alongside Thai dishes with a bit of spice – the richness and freshness can handle both.
