Sol de Andes draws its Merlot from two of Chile's most productive valleys — Maule and Colchagua — blending the warmth and ripeness of the former with the slightly more structured character of the latter. The result is exactly what good everyday Merlot should be: fresh, generous, and uncomplicated in the best sense. Raspberry and ripe plum carry the fruit, a waft of Virginia tobacco adds just enough intrigue, and a touch of American oak brings smoke and vanilla without crowding out the wine's natural freshness. The tannins are smooth enough to need no persuasion. This is a wine for Tuesday nights and long Sunday lunches in equal measure.
