San Leonardo is one of Italy's great Bordeaux-inflected reds, and this 2016 is a fine expression of why the estate commands such respect. From the Lagarina Valley in Trentino, where the Guerrieri Gonzaga family has been farming since the eighteenth century, it blends Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère, and Merlot into something that feels distinctly Italian despite the Bordelais blueprint: structured and serious, but with an Alpine freshness and an earthy, herbal edge that no Médoc château could quite replicate. The 2016 vintage gave generous, ripe fruit with excellent natural acidity, and after a decade the wine is starting to open up in a very rewarding way. Dark berry fruit, dried herbs, cigar leaf, and fine graphite tannins that have softened without losing their backbone.
