Trentham Estate sits on the banks of the Murray River in New South Wales, farming vines in one of Australia's most productive and quietly underrated wine regions. The Murray Darling has been Shiraz country since the nineteenth century, and Trentham understands this grape better than most — their version is generous and immediate without being overblown, using a mix of new and aged French oak to add structure rather than to perform it. The 2024 is deeply coloured, with ripe dark fruit, a flicker of cool mint, and mocha from the oak sitting comfortably alongside white pepper and sweet plum on the palate. Tannins are ripe and robust, the finish long and satisfying. This is a wine that wants a plate of food and good company rather than years in a cellar — drink it now until 2030 while that fruit is in full voice.
