Vilafonté was established in 1996 by two American winemakers, Zelma Long and Dr. Phil Freese (both ex-Mondavi), along with South African wine entrepreneur Mike Ratcliffe. This collaboration combines extensive expertise from both the American and South African wine industries. Seriously Old Dirt 2021 consists of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Malbec, 2% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc. Matured for eighteen months in French oak barrique. Layers of fresh fruit on the nose; plum, black cherry and blackberry along with warm notes of baking spice and vanilla pod. Subtle liquorice, tobacco and hazelnut add a luxurious dimension. Flavours of ripe black cherry develop into lovely mineral notes, along with a lingering finish. Sumptuous and supple, with a line of acidity, giving elegance and balance.
