Drink it now or cellar for up to 15 years. It is recommended to decant it for an hour. Located in southern Dalmatia, Volarević is a Croatian family-run winery that in 2005 decided to dedicate itself to wine production. After reclaiming the land and planting a vineyard, the company began producing wines from indigenous grape varieties. The vineyards, located in the Komarna area, cover approximately 600 square meters and benefit from a southern exposure, a Mediterranean climate cooled by sea currents, and karst soils. The grapes of the native Plavac Mali grape are harvested manually from a vineyard located in Komarna, not far from the sea, at an altitude of 72-132 meters. Here, the vines benefit from soil that is partly calcareous, which favors the production of wines with a mineral character. After vinification, the wine ages for 18-24 months in a mix of Croatian, French, and American barrels, followed by a further year in the bottle. Produced only in exceptional vintages, Plavac Mali Syrtis Gold Edition displays an intense, deep ruby red color with violet reflections. On the nose, it reveals a complex and broad aromatic profile with notes of dark fruits and wild berries, hints of vanilla, Mediterranean herbs, pepper, and cocoa. On the palate, it has a good body and a smooth texture, with silky tannins and a well-balanced acidity. The finish is long and recalls earthy mineral tones. Try it with goulash or game stews.
