Merchant's description

Cahors is the original home of Malbec, and Chateau Lamartine sits at its far western edge, on the oldest terraces of the Lot Valley. The Gayraud family have farmed here since 1883 - now four generations in, run by siblings Lise and Benjamin, with the vineyards in organic conversion. Their aim is stated plainly: typical Cahors that trades on sincerity, balance and freshness rather than weight. This is the estate's classic cuvée, Malbec-led with a little Merlot for roundness. The south-facing clay and limestone terraces ripen the Malbec fully, and the winemaking keeps oak deliberately in the background - so the fruit and the structure lead, not the barrel. The result is recognisably Cahors: dark-fruited and firm, but without the heaviness the grape can fall into elsewhere. Expect dark plum and wild blackberry, a savoury, faintly liquorice edge, and the fresh acidity that keeps the whole thing lively. Firm but fine tannins give it grip without weight. Serve at 16-18°C.
