Founded in 1987 in the Val do Salnés, the coolest and most Atlantic-influenced subzone of Rías Baixas, Mar de Frades has spent nearly four decades honing its expertise in Albariño. The winery sits on a granite hillside overlooking the Ría de Arousa, its ocean-facing position and granite soils shaping the salinity and freshness that define its wines. It farms 60 hectares of its own vineyards, including the historic old-vine site Finca Valiñas, alongside close partnerships with independent growers across the region's subzones. The winery is instantly recognisable by its signature cobalt-blue bottle, a deliberate nod to the Atlantic that has become one of the most iconic pieces of packaging in Spanish wine. Under longtime winemaker Paula Fandiño, Mar de Frades has continued to push Albariño in new directions, from pioneering the region's first traditional-method sparkling Albariño to its ongoing exploration of site-specific, terroir-driven bottlings like Finca Valiñas.
