Cellar for 20 years or more. Decant for up to 2 hours before serving. This is an unmistakable Chateauneuf du Pape, with a name that translates to “the feather of the painter”. It paints in broad strokes, with scents of red and black fruits, cocoa, and coffee, and details of mushroom and leather. It is 100% Grenache, grown on old vines with their roots in pebbly limestone soils. Situated in the region of Tavel in the Rhône Valley’s southern half, Domaine de la Mordorée was founded in 1986 by Francis Delorme and his son Christophe. Today it is owned and operated by Madeline and her daughter Ambre, who take a biodynamic and hands-on approach to winemaking, in order to express one of the finest and most recognisable terroirs in France. La Plume du Peintre is a deep ruby red in the glass, and coats the palate in pure, concentrated flavours of red fruits. It is powerful and full-bodied, unravelling ever more layers as it breathes. Look for notes of leather, smoke, and black truffle lurking in the background, alongside a clean limestone minerality. It is perfect for big occasions and hearty dinners, such as red meat stews, roast game, or diverse cheese boards.
