Trentham Estate’s 2021 Merlot is a generous, easy-drinking red from the Murray Darling, with the warm 2021 vintage giving the fruit plenty of concentration. There’s ripe cherry and mulberry on the nose, followed by sweet plum, spice and a little mocha, with a savoury touch from French oak. Medium to full-bodied, but with the soft, velvety tannins you want from Merlot, finishing smooth and nicely rounded. The fruit was fermented on skins for seven days, with a portion matured in new and older French oak before blending. A good one for the dinner table rather than a wine that needs much thought – try it with lamb chops, slow-cooked pork or a rich tomato-based pasta.
