Vega Sicilia Unico 2000
Vega Sicilia Unico 2000 is a dry, full-bodied red from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec (Ribera del Duero, Spain), in the full, structured reds style. Tannins are firm and acidity moderate; oak influence is noticeable. Those scales describe the wine when young; this is a 26-year-old bottle and its tannin and oak will have softened. Good with steak, lamb, roast chicken, roast pork.

Vega Sicilia Unico 2000 is a mature Tempranillo-based red wine produced in the Ribera del Duero region of Spain. Vega Sicilia was founded in 1864 by Don Eloy Lecanda y Chaves, who established the vineyards with cuttings of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec taken from the vineyards of Bordeaux. The estate planted Tempranillo alongside these Bordelais varietals, which now makes up the majority of the modern Vega Sicilia blend. The flagship wines are Unico and Unico Reserva Especial - the former is aged for 10 years before release while the latter is a blend of only the finest vintages. "The 2000 Unico is deep crimson-coloured with an ethereal perfume aided by its extended upbringing. Aromas of Asian spices, lavender, incense, truffle, and confiture of black fruits are compelling. Sweet, forward, rich, and hedonistic, it nevertheless has the balance and structure to continue evolving for another 5-10 years. In strong vintages Vega Sicilia drinks well at age 50 and I would expect the same of the 2000." Wine Advocate, 2011
