Merchant's description

Cellar for up to 9 years. No need to decant before serving. Talented winemaker Simon Waghorn has caught the attention of wine lovers all over the world with his remarkably elegant Burgundian-style Pinot Noirs which he and his wife Jane craft in New Zealand’s prestigious Marlborough wine region. The duo founded Astrolabe back in 1996 and have established a reputation for excellence built on careful vineyard selection, delicate handling of fruit at harvest, and a knack for blending to produce incredibly complex wines. The couple source their grapes from ten local families who all farm their vineyard sustainability and have been working with the Waghorns for years. This allows them to source top quality fruit from the Wairau Valley, Awatere Valley and Kekerengu Coast sub-regions of Marlborough and produce wines which present a snapshot of this stunning wine country. Grapes for the Astrolabe Marlborough Pinot Noir are sourced from the lower Waihopai and Wairau Valleys, the upper Brancott Valley and the Kekerengu Coast and are picked by hand. The wine is aged in oak barrels for 11 months to add hints of sweet spices and silky tannins to the wild dark fruits and plum flavours and aromas which comes from the grapes. Fresh and elegant yet backed up by the ripe fruit character, this is an excellent wine to drink with Asian duck dishes, seared tuna, or even venison.
