La Grande Année is the jewel in Champagne Bollinger’s crown and is the embodiment of their carefully preserved traditions and expertise. It is a blend of 65% Pinot Noir and 35% Chardonnay predominantly from the superior crus of Äy and Verzenay for the Pinot Noir, and Le Mesnil-sur-Oger and Oiry for the Chardonnay. As is traditional at Bollinger, it is fermented entirely in barrels and was disgorged in July 2019 with 8g/L dosage having been riddled by hand. The 2012 vintage was generally considered superb and this is a brilliant release that combines remarkable complexity of fruit, beguiling aromatics and wonderful mineral depth. Compared to the 2008, this is perhaps just as excellent but will perhaps need a little longer in the cellar as it has a bit more structure and weight.
